Spicy Pepper Jack Turkey Burgers

This past week we moved into a new apartment and it was NOT fun. During this process I found myself not wanting to cook, which is very hard to admit seeing as how I cook at least 2 times a day! I mean I love food but after a day full of moving furniture and getting 5 new bruises on my legs from smacking into couches and what not, I have just been in no mood to cook. Luckily the move is all over and I can get back to my normal routine. Well, I wouldn’t call it normal just yet, I still have a billion things to organize – one of which being my kitchen.

It has come to my attention that I have a gazillion kitchen appliances. While packing it all up my boyfriend asked if there was anything that I could part with and donate to Goodwill – and I seriously couldn’t imagine letting anything go! I use everything from my 600 shakers of salt to my spaetzle maker, and I love each any every one of my the same!

Anyways… I am back to my old self for cooking and felt like making a burger this week so this is what came of it…

I feel like Bobby Flay would really appreciate this Burger seeing as how he is such a burger fanatic, and I am pretty sure everyone else would really love this too! It is quite simple:

Part 1 – Carmelized Onions

  • Olive Oil for the pan
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • salt and pepper

Drizzle some olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the sliced onions and slowly cook, stirring frequently, for about 15 minutes until they are translucent. Season with salt, pepper and red pepper flakes.

Part 2: Avocado

  • 2 large Haas Avocados
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • salt and pepper

Cut the avocado lengthwise and remove the pit. Remove the skin from the sides and place flat side down on a cutting board. Cut long thin strips of the avocado and transfer to a plate. Drizzle with lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Feel free to snack on these while you are waiting for the burgers

Part 3: Burgers

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp red pepper flakes
  • 3 tbsp garlic power
  • 1 tbsp cayenne pepper powder
  • 1 jalapeno, finely chopped
  • salt and pepper
  • olive oil
  • 5 slices of pepperjack cheese

Combine all the ingredients together in a large bowl and divide mixture into 5 patties. In a large skillet add some olive oil and bring to a medium high heat. Sear the burgers for 4 minutes on each side until they have a nice golden crust. Transfer to a baking dish and top each with a slice of cheese. Finish the cooking in a 400 degree oven for about 15 minutes until the turkey is fully cooked at about an internal temp of 165 F. Once fully cooked, remove from oven and add the avocado slices and top with the caramelized onion mixture.

I chose to serve these without the buns so you could really taste the heat of the burger – and because I didn’t have any buns – and I am on a low carb diet this week (I guess the double chocolate chip muffin I had for breakfast this morning doesn’t really go along well with that – but whatev!)

Moving is definitely the worst! I just moved in with my boyfriend about three months ago and also would not part with any of my kitchen stuff… besides some old pots and pans. I had recently helped him pick out a new set of Calphalon ones, so no need for mine anymore! :)

Those burgers look so tasty. I love caramelized onions and avocado, so that's a perfect burger for me!

Chicken and avocado is an awesome combination, so I bet turkey and avocado must be great too. This looks delicious.

Your burger looks wonderful! I adore avocado, and I have never tried it with caramelized onions before. I think I need to give this a try!
