Tips & Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for picking the best summer tomatoes:

  1. Look for Vibrant Color: A ripe tomato should have a deep, consistent color. Whether red, yellow, orange, or purple, the color should be rich and uniform with no green or pale spots.
  2. Check the Firmness: Gently squeeze the tomato. It should feel firm but yield slightly under pressure, indicating ripeness. Avoid tomatoes that are too hard or overly soft.
  3. Smell the Stem End: A ripe tomato will have a sweet, earthy aroma near the stem. If there’s little to no scent, the tomato might not be fully ripe.
  4. Weight Matters: Heavier tomatoes tend to be juicier. Pick up a few tomatoes of similar size and choose the one that feels the most substantial.
  5. Check for Blemishes: Inspect the tomato for any cracks, bruises, or soft spots. Minor imperfections are okay, but large blemishes can indicate poor quality or spoilage.
  6. Know the Variety: Different varieties ripen differently. For example, heirloom tomatoes can have irregular shapes and still be perfectly ripe, while cherry tomatoes should be plump and fully colored.
  7. Pick Locally: If possible, buy tomatoes from a local farmers' market or pick your own. Local tomatoes are often fresher and allowed to ripen on the vine, resulting in better flavor.
  8. Seasonality: Tomatoes are best in the summer when they’re in season. Off-season tomatoes are often picked unripe and lack the full flavor of those harvested at peak ripeness. AKA - MAKE THIS SALAD IN THE SUMMERTIME MONTHS!
  9. Store Properly: If your tomatoes are slightly underripe, leave them at room temperature until they reach their peak. Once ripe, store them in a cool, but not cold, place. Avoid the refrigerator, as it can dull their flavor. And if you find yourself with too many tomatoes and need to use them quickly - make this incredible butter tomato sauce!
  10. Use Your Senses: Taste, touch, and smell are your best tools when selecting tomatoes. Don’t hesitate to ask to taste a sample if you’re at a market—ripe tomatoes should burst with flavor.
