When one of your besties calls you and is like, GABY YOU NEED TO TRY THIS DUMP CAKE. You don't ignore such a thing! That's basically how it went a few weeks back when Adam called and said, we just made the most like altering dump cake. I was like - what is dump cake?!? And then proceeded down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to put my Gaby spin on it and HERE WE ARE. The result is wildly delicious. And one cannot be trusted to be alone with said cake.

Ingredients

  • Unsalted butter
  • Box chocolate cake mix - are you shocked? You shouldn't be. Sometimes you just need a box of cake from the store. It's KEY when traveling too when you want to bake and don't want to stock an entire pantry
  • Marshmallow cream - the kind in a jar
  • Instant chocolate pudding
  • Milk
  • Marshmallows
  • Graham Crackers
  • Trader Joe’s Butterscotch Caramel Chocolate Balls (or any other favorite chocolate candy or butterscotch balls)

How to Make a Dump Cake

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 9x9 inch nonstick pan with non-stick baking spread and line with parchment paper.
  • Combine the butter and cake mix until smooth and then press the mixture into an even layer in the prepped baking pan. It will be thick - don't worry.
  • Using a rubber spatula, scoop the marshmallow topping on top of the cake mix and spread it in an even layer. Combine the pudding mix and milk and spoon spoonfuls on top of the marshmallow cream mixture. Top with the marshmallows and graham crackers.
  • Place the cake pan on a baking sheet (don't forget this part as it prevents any drips from getting on your oven), and transfer to the oven and bake until the marshmallows are quite puffy and the cake is set around the edges, about 1 hour. Remove the pan from the oven and let set for 30 minutes; the marshmallows will deflate. Top with the chopped Butterscotch balls. To serve, dollop with the whipped cream and top with additional graham cracker crumbs.

Tips and Tricks + FAQ's

Yes - it has the Trader Joe's Butterscotch Caramel Balls on top. They are an important part of the recipe so if you can get your hands on them, please do. If not, any chocolatey - caramel type candy will work instead. Or a peanut butter type candy like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups would be excellent too!

Yes - it uses a box cake mix. Don't judge me. It's a fantastic shortcut.

You need both marshmallow cream and large jet puffed marshmallows. More is more in this case.

Best to serve this with a large dollop of freshly whipped cream or even... ICE CREAM. It's decadent. It's rich. If you split the entire thing with your best friend, you'll both be sick so best to share the love with at least 6-10 people! But hey, you do you!! This is a no judgement zone!

My husband was in charge of dessert for Christmas, which means he buys it from a local place BUT he surprised me and made this! IT WAS AMAZING. Like a surprise in every bite 🙂
Dangerously good lol. He grew up in a pizza shop and has only ever made pizza. This is the first thing other than pizza that he’s made at home and wow it was a winner. He mentioned putting on the marshmallow cream was a bit challenging so not sure if warming it up before helps or if there’s a trick. Anyway it turned out gorgeous and might just be one of the best desserts I’ve ever had!

  2. I took my dessert out of the oven and it looks beautiful but jiggly…how do I know if it’s cooked all the way?

    1. I havent tested it with doubling the recipe! but the baking time would certainly change and it might affect the batter getting too over-baked on the outsides of the pan
