My love for Avocado Toast runs deep. Really deep. So deep that I created The perfect Avocado Toast recipe plus my five favorite ways to make it. When it comes to Avocados I'd consider myself an expert.

Not only did I grow up eating Avocados 24/7 but I wrote an entire book on Avocados (my first cookbook Absolutely Avocados).  With that came a lot of practice creating the the best avocado toast recipe and variations.  It was a tough job - but I'm here for you!

Before we get into my favorite variations of avo toast, let's dive into the basics of how to make a perfect avocado toast.

The Basic Ingredients

  • 1 piece thick cut grainy bread
  • ½ large ripe avocado
  • 1-2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Substitutions and Alternative Toppings

  • Cherry Tomatoes and Basil Vin for a delicious Tomato Basil Toast (or even the tomato jam from the breakfast sandwiches)
  • Smoked Salmon and Thinly Sliced Onions for an Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon and Red Onions
  • Scrambled Eggs and Crispy Bacon for a Bacon and Egg Avocado Toast
  • Pico de gallo is also another fun twist on avocado toast toppings

How to make Avocado Toast

  1. Pick a great avocado.  There is an art with how to pick a good avocado.  I tend to buy my avocados rock hard so they can ripen on my own kitchen counter without anyone else touching them. When they are ready, they should just have the slightest give to them
  2. The bread matters.  I prefer to use something thick and grainy. More flavor and substance to hold all that beautiful avocado.
  3. Chunky avocado vs smooth avocado... it's really a personal decision but I prefer it mostly smooth with a few chunks. If it's too chunky, I find that the avocado falls off and no one wants that.
  4. MALDON MALDON MALDON....always finish your avocado toast with a sprinkling of chunky salt. It bumps up the flavor in the best possible way and adds a bit of texture.
  5. Once your avocado is mashed, add salt and pepper to taste. Then, squeeze half a lemon over the mixture and stir everything together until evenly mixed.
  6. If you want some extra flavor or healthy fats, drizzle EVOO over the top of your toast. Then, sprinkle on some red chili flakes if you're feeling spicy!
  7. Pro Tip: Don't have any lemons on hand? No problem! You can always substitute lime juice in this recipe. Just remember to adjust the amount you use—Lime juice is quite a bit tarter than lemon juice, so start with less and add more to taste.

OK now that we have the basics covered and this answers your how do you make avocado toast question, here are my 5 favorite avocado toast toppings to take your avocado game to the next level.

Basil Vin Avocado Toast

Recipe FAQs

Is Avocado Toast healthy?

Sure is! Especially if you're using a great grainy bread. And avocados are loaded with all the good fats that we need on a daily basis. So you know what they say... an avocado a day...

What is the best way to smash an avocado?

I like to take the avocado flesh out of the skin, put it into a medium bowl and mash it with a fork. Don't add anything into the avocado (ie; herbs) until it's the desired consistency.

Is Avocado good for breakfast?

Heck yes it is. It's great for breakfast and lunch and dinner.

How long does an avocado last?

Once it's open, it has about a 2 day life. I like to spread a little lemon or lime juice on a halved avocado if I'm saving it for the next day to reduce any browning.

How do you store avocados?

If they are NOT ripe, I store them on the counter until they are ready. Once they are ripe, I transfer them to the fridge until ready to use!

How do you get avocados to ripen faster?

Place them in a brown paper bag with either a banana or apple.  This should speed up the ripening process by a day or two.

How to store Avocado Toast

Avocado toast is typically best when eaten immediately after preparation, as the avocado tends to brown quickly. If you want to enjoy the freshness and flavors, it's recommended to make it fresh each time you are craving this amazing dish. However if you have extras and want to save it here are some guide lines.

  1. Remove any toppings: If your avocado toast is topped with ingredients like tomatoes, bacon, or cheese, remove them before storing.
  2. Wrap tightly: Use plastic wrap or aluminum foil to tightly wrap the avocado toast. Make sure all sides are covered to prevent air exposure.
  3. Refrigerate promptly: Place the wrapped avocado toast in the refrigerator as soon as possible. The cool temperature will help slow down the oxidation process and keep the avocado from turning brown.
  4. Consume within a day: Avocado toast is best enjoyed fresh, so try to consume it within 24 hours of preparation. The longer it sits, the more the avocado will oxidize and the bread may become soggy.

And there you have it! Avocado toast is a delicious and healthy way to start your day, or to snack on in between meals.
