Why I Love This Recipe

I'll never say no to a perfectly baked brownie. Add to that some extra sweetness in the form of coconut, chocolate chips, butterscotch or caramel chips and some condensed milk... absolutely yes! These Magic Bar Brownies a little reminiscent of a Samoas girl scout cookie and we all know those reign supreme.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Dark chocolate chips
  • Unsalted butter
  • White sugar
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • All purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Semi sweet chocolate chips
  • Butterscotch chips
  • Pecans, chopped
  • Sweetened shredded coconut
  • Sweetened condensed milk

How to Make

Preheat the oven to 325° F. Line a 9×13 pan with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

In a medium pot combine the chocolate and the butter over medium low heat until smooth. Add in the sugar and stir to combine. Remove from the heat for 15 minutes to slightly cool. Add the eggs and vanilla and stir to combine. Add in the flour and salt and mix until just incorporated and smooth. Transfer to the baking pan and bake on the middle rack of your oven for 20-25 minutes.

Remove from the oven, the brownies might still jiggle a little and that’s ok.

Raise oven temp to 350° degrees F.

Sprinkle on the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, pecan pieces, shredded coconut and evenly drizzle on the sweetened condensed milk. Once the oven has reached 350 (don’t do it sooner) place back into the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 min.

Remove the Magic Bar Brownies the oven and cool completely before serving.

Tips & Tricks

  • If you want these to slice beautifully, you MUST let these cool entirely before slicing. If you're in a hurry, feel free to pop them in the fridge or freezer to make them set even faster before slicing.
  • If you want to take these out of the pan before slicing to make your life even easier, line the baking pan with 2 sheets of parchment paper so you can easily lift these out and slice on a cutting board.

Notes

You'll notice that some of the ingredients are listed by weight above - here's the deal... it's just more accurate. The flour is measured by scooping and leveling in my world, so the weighted amounts of flour / sugar are based off that. Trust in the process - these are amazing. 1. My daughter is nursing our grandson with food allergies. She is on soy and dairy free ( ok yo eat eggs) diet. Can the sweetened condensed milk be substituted with something else?
