Full disclosure here... I did make a couple of substitutions to keep the carb count down since my husband is diabetic and I have serious reactions to sugar. I did not have catsup on hand, so I used extra tomato sauce, and I substituted the brown sugar with Brown Sugar Swerve. I used half as much pineapple, though I'm sure that the full amount would have been even better.

This sauce turned out great. I was so surprised as to how easy this entire recipe was to prepare. I just put the pork shoulder in the Crock Pot all day and left it. I didn't have time to add the sauce until later, but it still was one of the best meals I've had in quite awhile.

This was a test-drive for a barbecue event I am putting on next month, and I believe it is a clear winner. Trying it ahead of time has lessened the stress and worry, because now I now it is a clear winner and won't take forever to prepare. I do plan to add all of the ingredients as suggested in the recipe the next time I make this.

  2. Could the “sauce” that goes over the top of the pork (onion, ketchup, vinegar,, spices, etc.) be combined the day before? Planning to make this dish at a friend’s home the next day and it would speed up the morning prep.

This is the first time in my 62 years of life that I’ve ever left a review for a recipe. This recipe is fantastic. I can’t say enough about it. I made a coleslaw dressing to go with it and actually serve it on Hawaiian buns. The only adjustment I will make next time to cut the red pepper flakes in half. I think 1 tablespoon will be a little much for those who don’t like spice Spice doesn’t bother me, but it has quite a bit of heat to it

Exactly the conclusion that I came to- my husband loved the entire recipe, but admitted that he already loves spicy foods. For those that don't care for so much heat, I've already planned to cut the red pepper flakes by half.
