Make Ahead Cranberry Sauce

Jump to Recipe

Cranberry sauce is one of those Thanksgiving non-negotiables, and this Make Ahead Cranberry Sauce is genuinely the version I look forward to making every single year. Bright, a little citrusy, and just the right balance of tart and sweet, it comes together fast and holds up beautifully in the fridge for days before the big meal. It is the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving table. It's simple to make, bursting with flavor from orange zest and nutmeg, and can be prepped days ahead so you can focus on the Herb Roasted Turkey come Thanksgiving Day. Serve it alongside Homemade Turkey Gravy for the ultimate spread, and save some for my Leftover Thanksgiving Sandwich the next day.

A table full of thanksgiving dishes such as cranberry sauce, gravy, squash, salad, and glasses of wine.

Why I Love This Recipe

Here's the deal: I love taking a shortcut from the store, but I draw the line at cranberry sauce. It's embarrassingly easy to make. So let's get it out of the way this weekend and then keep it refrigerated until the big day on Thursday. According to Thomas, cranberry is the most important part of the side dish game on Thanksgiving. (I'm partial to gravy) But hey, to each their own! Just five ingredients and minimal hands-on time! Make it days before Thanksgiving so there's one less thing to worry about on the big day.

Ingredients for Make Ahead Cranberry Sauce

Substitutions & Swaps

🍬 Brown Sugar

  • Granulated white sugar: Use the same amount for a slightly brighter cranberry flavor without the molasses notes of brown sugar.
  • Maple syrup: Adds a little extra fall flavor. Since it's a liquid sweetener, the sauce may have a different consistency.

💧 Water

  • Fresh orange juice: Swap some or all of the water for a stronger citrus flavor. The sauce will also be sweeter.
  • Apple cider: Adds a subtle apple flavor and extra sweetness that works well with the cranberries.

🫐 Fresh Cranberries

  • Frozen cranberries: A great substitute when fresh aren't available. Use them straight from the freezer without thawing; they may need a little extra cooking time.

🍊 Orange Zest

  • Lemon zest: Adds a brighter, slightly sharper citrus flavor.
  • Clementine or mandarin zest: A great alternative if that's what you have on hand.

🌰 Nutmeg

  • Cinnamon: A classic holiday alternative with a warm, familiar flavor.
  • Allspice: Use a small amount for a slightly more complex warm spice flavor.
  • Pumpkin pie spice: Works in a pinch if you want a blend of traditional fall spices.

🍊🫐🍂 Gaby's Tips & Tricks for the Best Make Ahead Cranberry Sauce

Five ingredients, zero excuses, and a week off your Thanksgiving to-do list.

  • Fresh or frozen cranberries both work. Fresh cranberries are great when they're in season, but frozen cranberries are an easy substitute. There's no need to thaw them first.
  • Dissolve the sugar before adding the cranberries. Bring the water and brown sugar to a boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.
  • Keep the heat at medium-low. Once the cranberries go in, let them simmer gently rather than boiling aggressively.
  • Watch for the cranberries to pop. Once most have burst and the sauce starts looking jammy, it's ready to come off the heat. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
  • Add the orange zest and nutmeg at the end. Stir them in after removing the pot from the heat for that fresh citrus flavor and warm spice finish.
  • Make it ahead. I love making this cranberry sauce several days before Thanksgiving. It's one less thing to worry about when the holiday arrives.
  • Refrigerate promptly. Transfer the sauce to shallow containers to help it cool, then refrigerate within two hours of cooking.
  • Serve it slightly less chilled. Take the sauce out of the fridge shortly before serving if you prefer it closer to room temperature.
