🥪🏈🧀 Tips & Tricks for the Best Game Day Sandwich Bar
Everything prepped and laid out, so the crowd builds their own
- Offer variety in every category. Two or three breads, a few proteins, a few cheeses, and lots of toppings means everyone can build their dream sandwich.
- Prep everything ahead. Slice the meats, cheeses, and vegetables a day early and store them separately so all you do is set out the board.
- Keep wet and dry separate. Put juicy tomatoes, pickles, and condiments in their own bowls so the breads don't go soggy.
- Label the condiments. Little tags or chalk markers save you from answering "which one is the aioli" forty times.
- Toast or grill some bread. Set out a few warm, crusty options alongside the soft ones for texture.
- Cover the dietary bases. Add a gluten-free bread, a vegetarian protein, and a dairy-free option so no one is left out.
- Slice proteins and cheese thin. Thin slices layer better and stretch further across a crowd.
- Keep it cold until go time. Hold the meats, cheeses, and cut vegetables in the fridge and set the board out within an hour of serving.
- Add crunch on the side. Chips, pita chips, and pickles round out every plate.
- Build a sample sandwich. Make one gorgeous stacked sandwich to set the tone and show people the move.
FAQs
What is a sandwich bar?
A sandwich bar is a build-your-own spread where breads, proteins, cheeses, condiments, and toppings are all prepped and laid out so guests assemble their own sandwiches. It is a relaxed, customizable way to feed a crowd, especially for game day or a party. Everything can be prepped ahead, so there is no day-of cooking.
What do you put on a game day sandwich bar?
Offer two or three breads, a few sliced deli meats plus a shredded chicken or vegetarian protein, several cheeses, and a big lineup of toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and pickles. Add a range of condiments and some chips on the side. Variety in every category is the key.
How do you set up a sandwich bar for a party?
Prep all the components a day ahead and store them separately, then arrange them in order from bread to protein to cheese to toppings to condiments so the line flows. Keep wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls so the bread stays fresh. Set everything out within an hour of serving and keep perishables chilled until then.
How much food do I need for a sandwich bar?
Plan for about 1 to 2 sandwiches per person, with roughly 2 to 3 ounces of meat and a slice or two of cheese each. It is always better to have a little extra bread and toppings than to run short. Leftovers store well separately.
Can I make a sandwich bar ahead of time?
Yes, that is the whole appeal. Slice the meats, cheeses, and vegetables and make any spreads up to a day in advance, then store everything separately in the fridge. Assemble the board within an hour of serving so the bread and produce stay fresh.

Awesome idea for a summer Bunko night!! Thanks.
I LOVE having make-it-yourself buffets when I have people over. Call me lazy, but it's easy and the best part is everyone can make it exactly the way they like it! When the ladies and I get together for a crafting day, a Sandwich Bar like this is the perfect solution with a big pot of slow cooker soup. Thanks for sharing!
What a great idea! This looks like the best spread and a great way to flavorfully feed a group! Should be a game fun day!!
