Have you ever had a samosa before? It’s a fried or baked pastry stuffed with savory fillings like spiced potatoes, onions, peas, cheese and beef. It’s mega delicious! Now imagine all that piled on a PIZZA!! I give you the Samosa Pizza!
One of the last meals I had pre-quarantine was the most delicious samosa from the farmers market!! It was perfectly seasoned, a little spicy, loaded with potatoes, peas and ground beef and it was perfection!! Seeing as how we’ve got a whole lotta time on our hands these days, I decided to turn it into a Samosa Pizza and add cheese and fresh herbs on top. It’s PERFECTION and the extra samosa toppings can easily be used to fold into a rice bowl or just eaten plain for an addition meal. You guys… get ready.
More so than ever, I’m traveling through my kitchen. You’ve probably already gathered that if you have my most recent cookbook! But I’m extending it to the blog too. We aren’t getting on a plane anytime soon so I’m bringing the flavor of the world to my kitchen! While I’ve never been to India (it’s HIGH on my to-go list!), I’ve had Samosas in various Indian markets around the world. Samosa are frequent snacks all throughout the Indian subcontinent, Western Asia, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa. And let me tell you – they do not disappoint!
The fillings can range all over the place but my favorite is spiced potatoes, onions, peas, cheese and beef. We turned it into a pizza because those flavors are DELICIOUS any way you serve them. And if you have leftover samosa ingredients, just save them for the next day and make fried potatoes for breakfast with a fried egg, and ketchup obviously. Samosa pizzas coming in hot….
For the Potatoes
- 2 Russet Potatoes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 jalapeno, minced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup frozen peas
- 2 tablespoon cilantro, chopped
- 1 lemon, juiced
For the Beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1/3 cup water
For the Pizza
- 1 lb store bought pizza dough
- olive oil for drizzling
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, torn into pieces
- Fresh cilantro, mint and lemon juice to garnish
- Preheat the oven to 500 with a pizza stone
For the Potatoes
- Peel and cut the potatoes into 1 inch pieces and put into a medium pot covered by 1 inch of water. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook for 5-8 minutes. Check with a knife to make sure it’s fork tender, drain and put in a bowl to cool
- Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium high heat, when it’s hot add the jalapeño and garlic and cook for 1 minute
- Add cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, cayenne pepper and cook for 1 minute more. Add the cooked potatoes and peas, stirring to mix and break/mash the potatoes into varied crumbly pieces. You can use a potato masher to help with this. Cook for 3 minutes. Remove the potato filling to a bowl, sprinkle on lemon juice and stir in the fresh cilantro. Season with salt and pepper
For the Beef
- In the same skillet, heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes until it starts to caramelize, stir in garlic, garam masala and cayenne cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the ground beef to the pan and cook until it’s no longer pink and starting to brown, about 5-7 minutes
- Add the tomato paste and water, cook for 3 minutes. Remove to a bowl to cool as you shape the pizza dough
For the Pizza
- Divide the pizza dough into 2 even portions. Stretch each piece of dough in a circular motion, then lay them both out on a flat surface dusted with flour and roll out with a rolling pin. If you have a pizza peel, sprinkle with flour and place one stretched dough on the peel
- Drizzle each of the pizza dough with a little olive oil and spread a layer of meat sauce onto the dough leaving a 1/2 inch border, equal parts of the mozzarella and sprinkle on some of the samosa topping
- Transfer the pizza to the pizza stone and bake for 12-13 minutes until the crust is golden
- Remove the pizza from the oven season with additional salt and pepper, fresh cilantro, mint and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice

This pizza had so many unique flavors going and I really loved it. We ended up having leftover meat and potato mixture and used the meat for nachos! So good. Would make this again!
I have converted this to a vegan pizza using vegan substitutions and it’s one of my family’s favorite meals. They love the combination of the spices of a samosa with their favorite pizza. It also comes together pretty quickly, which is nice for a weeknight dinner.
So delicious! Left it as pizza for my husband and I and took some of the beef and toppings and served those to our 11 month old. Everyone loved it!
