Why I Love This Recipe

Few things in life are certain. One of them being that swim suit season is right around the corner and I have a thing for pool parties. And really cute bright colored swimsuits. Another thing in life that is certain is that I am really bad at "dieting." It doesn't really work for me. Never has. Never will. I am terrible at depriving myself of something I really want. For example if I make a proclamation that I am not going to eat sugar for an entire month, I will literally give in within 24 hours. Who am I? I came to the conclusion many years ago that the best thing for me is just to eat what I want, when I want, and keep it all in moderation.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 2 cups spinach

Substitutions & Swaps

🥬 Greens

  • Baby spinach (called for) - The mildest green; you genuinely cannot taste it behind the fruit
  • Kale - Heartier and more nutrient-dense; strip the stems and blend longer
  • Frozen spinach cubes - Extra cold and longer-lasting; use 1 to 2 and cut other frozen fruit slightly
  • Romaine or Swiss chard - Surprisingly neutral swaps when that is what is in the fridge

🍓 Fruit

  • Frozen mango (called for) - Sweet, tropical, and thickens the smoothie as it blends
  • Pineapple - Brighter and tangier; great with the orange juice
  • Frozen banana - Use it frozen for an even creamier, colder blend
  • Green apple or pear - Crisp, less sweet, leans the flavor more vegetal-fresh

🥤 Liquid Base

  • Fresh orange juice (called for) - Adds brightness and natural sweetness
  • Coconut water - Lighter and more hydrating, less sweet
  • Almond or oat milk - Makes it creamier and milk-based if you prefer
  • Plain water - The neutral, lowest-sugar option

➕ Boosters & Add-Ins

  • Chia seeds (called for) - Adds fiber, omega-3s, and a little body
  • Protein powder - Turns it into a complete, filling meal
  • Nut butter or avocado - Creamier texture and staying power
  • Hemp hearts, flax, or bee pollen - Easy nutrient bumps you will not taste
  • Fresh ginger - A small knob adds zing and a digestion-friendly kick

🥬🍓🥤 Tips & Tricks for the Best Green Machine Smoothie

Silky, bright, and packed with greens you'll never taste

  • Blend the greens and liquid first. Pureeing spinach with the orange juice before adding frozen fruit gets rid of any leafy bits so the texture is smooth.
  • Use frozen fruit instead of ice. Frozen mango and banana chill and thicken at the same time, where ice just waters the smoothie down.
  • Add liquid to the blender first. Liquid on the bottom gives the blades something to grab so everything pulls down and blends evenly.
  • Start with 2 cups of spinach and build trust. The fruit easily hides that much; once you see you cannot taste it, add more for extra nutrients.
  • Hydrate the chia for 5 minutes if you have time. Letting chia sit in the juice softens it so it blends in seamlessly instead of staying gritty.
  • Taste and adjust the sweetness with the banana. A riper banana sweetens naturally, so reach for that before adding any honey or syrup.
  • Make freezer smoothie packs. Portion fruit and a handful of spinach into bags so a busy morning is just dump, add juice, and blend.
  • Blend longer than you think. A full 60 seconds is what separates a silky smoothie from a chunky one, especially with kale.
  • Drink it within 15 minutes. Smoothies start to separate and oxidize, so it is brightest and best right after blending.
  • Adjust thickness with liquid, not more fruit. Too thick? Add a splash of juice or water; adding fruit just changes the flavor balance.

I feel like it's basically what all those fabulous French women do, but California style. Gaby style. It's how I roll.

One of the things I do to keep myself in check, is start my day with a smoothie. This one is part fruit, part vegetable, part freshly squeezed orange juice and some chia seeds! You could add hemp hearts, flax seed, bee pollen or whatever other add-ins you prefer! It's bright and fresh and fruity and I love it! If you prefer a smoothie that is milk-based, this breakfast spinach smoothie is delish!!

FAQs

What is a green machine smoothie?

A green machine smoothie is a fruit-and-vegetable blended drink that packs a big handful of leafy greens behind sweet fruit. This version blends frozen mango, banana, fresh orange juice, chia seeds, and spinach until smooth. The fruit keeps it bright and sweet while the spinach adds nutrients you cannot taste.

Can I taste the spinach in this smoothie?

No, and that is the whole point. Mango and banana are sweet and assertive enough to completely mask the spinach. Start with 2 cups and add more once you trust it.

Can I make this smoothie ahead or freeze it?

Smoothies are best fresh, but you can freeze this one in molds or an airtight jar for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight or blend it straight from frozen with a splash of juice. Give it a good shake or re-blend, since natural separation is normal.

Can I use frozen spinach instead of fresh?

Yes, a frozen spinach cube or two works well and makes the smoothie extra cold. Frozen greens blend smoothly and last longer than fresh. Reduce the other frozen fruit slightly so it is not too thick.

How can I make this smoothie more filling?

Add a scoop of protein powder, a spoon of nut butter, or hemp hearts for staying power. Avocado makes it creamier without changing the flavor. See the Substitutions section for more add-in ideas.

Wow! Just made this delicious smoothie. It’s very tasty. You wouldn’t even know spinach is in this. It’s got a tropical flavor because of the mango but the banana balances it out. Thanks Gaby for this yummy recipe.
